See things differently. Create something original.
Photography is so much more than taking a picture. It is an opportunity to experiment, develop technical skills and explore your creativity through both digital and physical processes.
Whether you already study Art, Textiles or Graphic Design, Photography is a fantastic way to complement your existing subjects, combine different skills and take your ideas in exciting new directions.
Topics Studied: Students will develop a strong understanding of photography through practical and creative exploration. This includes learning to use cameras manually, digital image editing, darkroom techniques, experimental processes and some chemical-based photographic methods. Structured similarly to a Fine Art A Level, the course encourages independent and self-directed learning, allowing students to pursue their own interests through themed projects and a Personal Investigation. This approach helps students build technical skills, creativity, and a distinctive photographic practice.
Coursework and assessment:
-
Personal Investigation: This component accounts for 60% of the A-level grade, requiring students to develop a line of enquiry on a subject of their choice, leading to a practical outcome supported by a written essay (1000-3000 words).
-
Externally Set Assignment: This component makes up 40% of the A-level grade, which includes practical work and a written response.
The coursework is assessed through practical work and a written element, with a total of 15 hours of supervised time for the externally set assignment.
Where could it take you?
Photography can support your other creative subjects while helping you build a diverse portfolio for further study and careers in photography, graphic design, fashion, advertising, film, media and the wider creative industries.
You don't need to be an expert photographer to get started. This course is about developing your skills, trying new things and discovering what you can create.
In a world where taking a picture is more accessible than ever, learn how to transform an image into something extraordinary.
