Further Maths A Level

Head of Department: Mr S Jones

Syllabus Title: A-Level Further Mathematics

Exam Board: AQA

Length of course: 2 years

Entry requirements:

GCSE Maths - grade 8 or above in Maths.

Description:

A-Level Further Mathematics is a highly desirable qualification that helps students achieve their aspirations for further study and their future career. For many universities, Further Mathematics is an impressive addition to an application and  is well suited to students intending to study advanced Engineering (chemical, mechanical, electronic and electrical, or civil) or Mathematics at degree level. Students are introduced to a wider range of pure and applied content, such as matrices and complex numbers. Students who have studied Further Mathematics are often a step ahead of their peers when transitioning to university courses.

Further Mathematics needs to be taken in addition to A-Level Mathematics, so together these will take up two option choices. Our Further Mathematics class sizes are small, allowing staff to develop deeper working relationships with students as they encounter more complex concepts. This is similar to the discussion groups that prestigious universities offer.

Topics studied in this course:

Mathematical argument, language and proof

Mathematical problem solving

Mathematical modelling

  • Proof

  • Complex numbers

  • Matrices

  • Further Algebra and Functions

  • Further Calculus

  • Further Vectors

  • Polar coordinates

  • Hyperbolic functions

  • Differential equations

  • Trigonometry

  • Numerical Methods

In addition, students will study two of these options:

  • Optional application 1 – mechanics

  • Optional application 2 – statistics

  • Optional application 3 – discrete

Coursework and assessment of the course:

Paper 1: Mathematical Argument, language and Proof; Mathematical Problem-Solving; Mathematical Modelling - 2hrs, 100 marks (⅓ total grade)

Paper 2: Mathematical Argument, language and Proof; Mathematical Problem-Solving; Mathematical Modelling - 2hrs, 100 marks (⅓ total grade)

Paper 3: Mechanics; Statistics; Discrete (two of the three options) - 2hrs, 100 marks (⅓ total grade)

Post A Level:

A good result in Further Mathematics can open a variety of doors to top level careers, and is especially valued by Russell Group universities. It can often be beneficial to a university application, and will set a student apart from competing applicants.

What the students say about this course:

“Further Mathematics was challenging but gives more of an understanding of maths in the real world”.

“The smaller groups enabled us to discuss the topic and help each other through the more difficult content”

“Having so much access to a Maths specialist was really useful”
