Year 11 & 13 Revision Strategies

Our current year 11 and 13 students have had a tough few years, with Covid impacting their flow of learning.  As a result, the government is allowing GCSE students to have a formula sheet, and whilst this is beneficial, students will need to know how and when to apply those formulae in order to solve problems.

Year 11s are now in revision mode - lessons being taught are based on results from exam trials, and are deliberately focused on filling knowledge gaps. Final trial exams are happening this week and will show clearly the progress from year 10 through to where they are now.

  Non-Calc Paper - Feb 27th,  morning

  Calc 1 Paper - Feb 28th, morning

  Calc 2 Paper - Feb 29th, afternoon

All trials will be sat in the sports hall in exam conditions, and students entitled to extra time or additional support will receive that support in a similar way to the summer arrangements. Please ensure that students are fully equipped as needed.

Students will soon receive their printed 9 week revision schedule which outlines what subjects that students need to revise during their evening time. Every night, a number of MathsWatch clips need to be worked through - students understand that when attempting the MathsWatch assignment,  firstly they use pen & paper to attempt the question and when they come across questions that they are not comfortable with, they need to use the teaching video(s) for that subject to fill that knowledge gap before retrying the assigned questions, eventually ticking off that topic and moving on.

The 9 week revision schedule is available for download below, as well as a topic list that students can use to 'tick off' their understanding as they go through revision topics.

We've also provided links to recordings of GCSE Maths exams being answered, and they can be found HERE.

Year 13s have sat new year trials and have their results. We will soon distribute their 8 week revision schedule, which in a similar way to year 11s, outlines what topics they need to revise each week between now and the exams.  Students really need to grapple with as many past paper questions as possible (papers are available on demand from the Maths room).

Your son/daughter's Maths teacher will keep an eye on their electronic revision progress, and will be in touch if we need to work together to get a student back on track.

As parents/guardians you may need to encourage (nag) your son or daughter to start their revision effort now, and help them gain the necessary disciplines, but they will thank you for it, because their confidence will grow and they will not feel stressed if fully prepared.  They will also get a very long summer to look forward to!

If you have any questions, please contact Mr Jones (s.jones@denemagna.gloucs.sch.uk) or contact your son/daughter's Maths teacher.
